How do I know if this challenge is right for me and my project?
Can I apply with an existing business or startup?
Absolutely! The Low Carbon Challenge is designed to support new ideas and existing businesses. You can enter the challenge to extend or expand an existing idea or work with your existing business and team to launch a new initiative. As long as it will have a positive dent in our cities carbon emissions, you can give it a go!
I’ve got a day job, can I still do the challenge?
Sure can! The Low Carbon Challenge is designed to fit around your current work schedule. Workshops are in the evenings and there are a couple of events / opportunities on weekends as well. Expect every member in your team to commit 10-20 hours to the project during the challenge to make the most of it.
Can I apply with a totally new idea?
Yes! Getting ideas off the ground is never easy, and the challenge will be a big burst of support and energy to help you get going. Crowdfunding is a great way to validate a new concept or idea and you’ll be able to use the challenge to align with some great mentors and potential partners.
What if I don’t have a team? Can I still apply?
Yes it’s possible. We know life is tough as a solo entrepreneur. If you’re looking for teammates or co-founders the challenge could be a great burst of momentum to help you find the right people. If you are intending to run solo, be ready for a heavier workload, especially around crowdfunding time!
How do I know if my project fits into Low Carbon?
We’re looking for projects that are working in housing and building, transport, waste or energy and open to supporting any kind of initiative that will help our city to lower its carbon footprint. If you think your work fits into that, it’s worth giving it a go!
When do I find out if I’m in?
Applications will close in mid August, 2 weeks after the our launch event. After that an independent team with smart brains from across climate change, startups, crowdfunding and the city council will choose 6 teams to join the challenge.
